How Crucigrid works

Playing the daily puzzles, typing Ñ, streaks, making your own puzzles and printing.

The daily puzzle

Every day there's a new crossword and word find on the same theme, free and with no account needed. A new puzzle starts at midnight Central time (Chicago), and holidays like Día de Muertos and Navidad get their own themes.

Switch between the two with the tabs at the top. Your progress is saved on this device, so you can close the page and come back later.

Playing the crossword

  • Tap or click a square and type. The cursor moves to the next square on its own.
  • Tap the same square again, or press Space, to switch between across and down.
  • Tab jumps to the next clue (Shift + Tab goes back), the arrow keys move around, and Backspace erases.
  • You can also tap a clue in the list, or use the ‹ › arrows next to the current clue.
  • Accents don't matter in the crossword. Type MAIZ for MAÍZ; accented and plain letters share a square. Ñ is its own letter, though (see below).
  • Turn on English hints to see each clue translated.

Check marks wrong letters, Reveal shows the whole solution, and Clear starts over.

Typing Ñ and accents

In the crossword, use the Ñ button under the grid, or type it from your keyboard:

  • Phone or tablet: press and hold N, then choose Ñ.
  • Mac: Option + N, then N.
  • Windows: hold Alt and type 0209 on the number pad, or add the Spanish or US International keyboard.
  • Chromebook: add the Spanish or US International keyboard in Settings.

You never need to type accents in the crossword. On the Create page, accents in your word list are kept.

Streaks

Solve the daily puzzle on consecutive days to build a streak. There are three: the crossword, the word find, and both on the same day. Your longest current streak shows at the top of the page.

  • A streak only breaks after you miss a whole day, so you have until midnight Central time.
  • Using Reveal or Show answers means that puzzle won't count for the day. You'll be asked to confirm first. Check is fine to use.
  • Without an account, your streak is kept on this device. Sign in to keep it on any device; your streak so far comes with you.
  • Puzzles from the archive don't count toward streaks.

Making your own puzzle

On the Create page, put one word per line. For a crossword, add a clue after a dash, a colon, an equals sign or a tab, and optionally an English hint after |:

gato - Animal que maúlla | Animal that meows
perro - Mejor amigo del hombre
maíz: Cereal de las palomitas

You can also paste two or three columns straight from a spreadsheet. Clues are optional for word finds. Up to 40 words fit in one puzzle, and any line that needs fixing is listed with its line number.

  • Start from the word bank fills the list with ready-made words, clues and English hints by topic and level. Edit them however you like.
  • Treat LL and CH as single squares follows the traditional Spanish alphabet: CALLE takes 4 squares instead of 5.
  • For word finds, choose whether words can run diagonally or backwards, and the grid size.
  • Not happy with the layout? Try another layout gives you a new one from the same words.
  • Translation mode (Premium) shows students English and has them write or find the Spanish. Write lines like gato - cat.

Printing

Download PDF gives you a ready-to-print worksheet: the puzzle with name and date lines on page 1, and the answer key on page 2. Choose US Letter or A4 before downloading.

Free PDFs carry a light watermark. Premium PDFs are clean and can show your school and class at the top; set that up under Account.

Premium

Playing online is always free. Premium adds tools for teachers:

  • Watermark-free PDFs with your own header
  • Saved word lists
  • Mixing word bank topics and levels, up to 40 words
  • Translation mode
  • The archive of past daily puzzles, to play or print
